Gear Reviews by Hikers who Own It & Use It
Mountain Blazers was created to teach backpacking. Staying true to that theme, we only review the hiking gear we use, or used, on a regular basis.
Hyke & Byke Zion 2P Backpacking Tent
Jerry's Hyke & Byke Zion 2P in action. This was following a rain storm, which is why his trekking poles are being used to dry his pack cover and rain coat. Picture taken along Flat Laurel Creek in the Pisgah National Forest.
Klymit Insulated Static V Lite Sleeping Pad
Jerry's Static V Inflatable Pad. This was taken at the Plumorchard Gap Shelter along the AT in Georgia, waiting out a rain storm, during a 2 day section hike, September 2019. Might as well enjoy an afternoon nap.
Eureka! Midori 2 Backpacking Tent
Jerry's Eureka! Midori 2. This was the 2nd evening of a 2.5 day section hike on the AT in July 2015, from Winding Stair Gap to Wesser, NC. The Nantahala Outdoor Center in Wesser is a great finish to a section hike.
Hyke & Byke Eulos 800FP 30 Deg Sleeping Bag
Jerry is enjoying his morning coffee in his Hyke & Byke sleeping bag. Pic was taken in early October 12th, 2019, near the Black Balsam Knob Trialhead in the Pisgah National Forest. We hiked a beautiful 7.8 miles on this day.
MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove
Jerry's MSR Pocket Rocket in action. I purchased this in 2015. It has never failed me. This was the Commissary Hill campground at Mt. Mitchell in early August 2019. Boiling some water for a delicious oatmeal breakfast.
Outdoorsman Lab Inflatable Sleeping Pad
Jerry's Outdoorsman Inflatable Pad packs down small. This picture shows why I decided to change the inflatable pad I had used since 2015. Though I ended up purchasing another inflatable pad (Klymit), I am keeping this one for now. It performed well.
Eureka! Suma 2 Backpacking Tent
Javier's Eureka! Suma 2 at Commissary Hill Campsite, Mt. Mitchell, in early August 2019.
Alps Mountaineering Backpacking Tent
Alps Mountaineering backpacking tent, in use by a guest of the Mountain Blazers at Mt. Mitchell in early August 2019.
Osprey Atmos AG 65 Backpack
Jerry's first hike with his Osprey pack, July 29th, 2015. This was just beyond Winding Stair Gap on the AT in North Carolina. I still use this pack and see no need to change.
Alps Mountaineering Self Inflatable Pad
Jerry's Alps Mountaineering Self Inflatable Sleeping Pad. I used this on two long AT section hikes, in 2015 and 2017. I finally decided I wanted something smaller and lighter in the summer of 2019.
